W/C 6th September 2021

Sunday 5th September

I don't always start on a Sunday but then the last few Sundays I have taken some cracking photo's of Dembe so I have decided to share them.

Dembe's love affair continued today when I found two long lost socks tucked inside a tea towel which were a casualty of the tumble dryer. The socks were paired ( although they weren't a pair ) and then placed on the stairs ready to be taken upstairs. Dembe though had other ideas and immediately grabbed them and then paraded around the lounge with them.

He was so very proud of himself and he paraded with them several times throughout the day.

He decided today to dig out his tweed puppy from his toy box. He has had this toy since he was a tiny pup. He got it one day when I was at the doctors and daddy took Dembe to the indoor market for some environmentalisation training. Dembe chose this from the pet shop as daddy asked him to choose a toy. This was what he went for. He wasn't very happy when he had to hand it over for it to be rung up.

Monday 6th September

As Dembe's intermittent limp had gone away we decided to allow him to go out for a walk with Luke from Happy Dogs. He had a lovely walk and was fine after his walk. As it was so warm I got his paddling pool out to allow him to cool down as the temperature had soared whilst he was out with Luke.

Later on in the afternoon it became clear that Dembe's limp was back and worse than before, so I rang the vets and got an appointment booked for the following morning at 11am. As we still had some pain relief left I mixed it in with some cottage cheese and gave it to him. He goes crazy for cottage cheese.

You can see some slight evidence of his cottage cheese with the white dot on his nose!

Tuesday 7th September

Dembe has the vets today with his daddy at 11am. I decided to stay at home because it is so hot and due to Covid-19 I wont be allowed in the vets, only one of us can go in. Dembe and daddy are back much quicker than I expected. Today the vet has finally been able to see his limp, she has booked him in for a set of 6 x-rays, 3 on each front leg. In the meantime we have pain relief for him and we have to reduce his exercise with immediate effect. He is now only allowed 25 minutes off lead a day and the rest are just walks around the block for toilet breaks. The vet has said this could be a muscle tear that is just taking a while to heal but it could also be elbow dysplasia. They just wont know until the othopedic specialist has written their report after viewing the X-rays.

Due to the restricted exercise I have had to cancel all of Dembe's walks that he has booked with professional dog walkers. It is a shame as Dembe loves his walks but we need to ensure he isn't doing any further damage. We shall be playing some brain games with him to stimulate him mentally. As it is so hot Dembe isn't having long walks anyway.

Very grateful that he is insured as the X-rays alone will be coming in at over £700!

As is usual when his daddy is home I barely get a look in! It is the Daddy and Dembe love in today.

Wednesday 8th September

Today will be Dembe's first day without his afternoon walk, that he would usually get on a Wednesday. As Sophie was on holiday he wasn't booked in for one today, so daddy is popping home on his lunch break at 5pm to take him around the block.

When Jay goes to work Dembe is stuck to me like glue. I am writing this week's blog post on my The Myasthenia Kid and he has nestled beside me on the sofa.

With his treat box coming last week it has made things easier occupying him. I pulled out a humongous furry cows ear (yuck), He enjoyed it and it kept him out of trouble.

When I was doing my pilates exercises Dembe climbed on top of me and dropped his wet partially chewed cows ear on my face, thanks boy! Mummy is always a climbing frame when she is on the floor no matter what she is doing.

He spent quite a bit of the afternoon snoozing and was very ready when his dad came home at 5pm for his walk around the block. When Jay got in at 10pm Dembe got his last walk of the day.

Thursday 9th September

Dembe was fizzing with energy today, it is safe to say he is missing the exercise that a long run brings. He is being a bit barky today so I decided to start playing brain games with him and so some training as well. It has been a long time since I have done this and I really need to get back in the habit.

I managed to capture him in this photo just on the inhale before he barked.

And here he is looking very cute

For our first brain game I got a muffin tin form the kitchen and some treats. I then searched through Dembe's toy box and found all the balls that he had plus a few toys. I then placed treats into the tin and covered the holes where the treats were with the toys. Whilst doing this i made Dembe sit and stay as otherwise he would have eaten them before I had the treats covered. As you can see from the video ( well hear) his nose is really engaged with this game as he works out where all the treats have been hidden.

I upped the difficulty level on each game, I did this by adding flat coasters instead of toys over the top of the treats so he had to work out that he had to slide the coasters.

Another game we played is one I call touch, so a while ago I trained Dembe to touch the palm of my hand with his nose when I say the command touch. I then vary the position my hands are in and change which hand I will use so no hand is in the same position twice. I don't think we had played this for around a year and he remembered it straight off. Of course this time I couldn't do any positions where he would be jumping up like I did before.

Daddy was due home at 6pm ( he had already been home at lunch time and walked him around the block), Dembe wanted to go to the toilet ( despite the fact the back door was open all afternoon) and lay in front of the door to let me know that is what he wanted.

Friday 10th September

Daddy was home poorly from work today, he had come down with a migraine overnight. He doesn't get them very often but when he does they are bad ones. Dembe spent a lot of the day upstairs with his daddy keeping him company. I wasn't feeling brilliant either with intermittent vertigo.

Dembe was knackered after being on duty all day!

Saturday 11th September

Daddy was back to work today and was on a late finish. None of us woke up until gone 9am, Dembe had been out at 5.30am but had come back to bed and had promptly fallen asleep. We were in shock that Dembe had allowed us to sleep for that long as lie in's are not something he does.

We are looking at changing Dembe's food again as he has been really awful of late with his food and turning up his nose. We have had a really good 18 months - 2 years with his eating but it is a royal pain in the arse when he starts refusing to eat. So we have decided to go back and try raw or B.A.R.F - biologically appropriate raw food. Dembe has problems with his ears which 9/10 is caused by an allergy to something in his diet, plus he has got a bit pudgy and needs to lose some weight. I went back to my favourite raw food site which is Dogs First and looked up how they recommended to switch a fussy eater over to raw. So for the last few days I have been adding a small amount of minced beef to his meals as we know that he likes raw mince from when I make his meat loaf.

Well the minced beef has gone down so well he is back to inhaling his meals and I have been able to reduce the amount of his normal food and replace it with beef. We shall still be doing this slowly and will use beef mince when we start moving him over to a better balanced raw food. I haven't seen him eat like that since he was a puppy!

As Dembe was a sleepy boy today I managed to get some sewing done this afternoon. I did give him a deer leg to chew on but he didn't take any notice of that until later in the evening when he stripped it completely.

He was a very good boy for me today apart from when I was having my dinner and trying to watch an Italian TV show that had English subtitles. Dembe kept managing to position himself between my plate and the Tv so I was having to guess at what was being said whilst the subtitles were obscured.

We don't have any plans for Sunday other than to chill out and get some housework done! See you all next week

Week Commencing Monday 16th August 2021

W/C 16th August 2021

Firstly Thank you for joining us from our old site on Wordpress! Over the coming months I will be transferring all of the old posts on to this site.

Monday 16th August

Well what can I say as usual Dembe’s daddy was on an early shift as he is the majority of Monday’s. I woke up at 7am and Dembe was sleeping beside me. He failed to rise until 8am! He then barked at me demanding his breakfast.

Dembe had a dog walk booked with Happy dogs this morning. As a new dog walker will be taking over from Martin, we were introduced to Luke who we have met before at Obedience training. So it was nice as Dembe knows Luke. Dembe also made the most of the fact that Luke was new-ish and ensure he got a cuddle before jumping into the back of the van.

Martin and Luke were happy to report that Dembe was a very good boy on his walk this morning and no sign of a limp which is fantastic news. We are continuing with Dembe’s medication until the end of the week to ensure that he is fully healed if this is a soft tissue injury.

We played Nudge for hours this afternoon, when we weren’t having lots of cuddles. Dembe was starving and started demanding his dinner at 3pm. I had to hold off as Jay was getting home just after 4pm and I didn’t want Dembe running around on a full tummy as that is a risk for him getting bloat.

Tuesday 17th August

I had a mishap overnight at 3am and Dembe came running into the bathroom all concerned bringing his bunny with him bless him. He was all wide awake for a while after but I managed to convince him that he needed to go back to sleep.

Dembe has decided that he likes eating his breakfast alfresco!

He now will go out and have his breakfast whilst his dad is out there having a smoke. He will also happily eat out there alone if I am in the kitchen.

This afternoon we took Dembe up to the model airfield, we bumped into Sophie from Creature Kind and I got to see her new puppy Demi. She is absolutely gorgeous as is her older sister Cali. Jay found out that Sophie was going to be walking towards Beth who also works at Creature kind, so they walked together. Sophie then asked Beth if she would show Jay where the pond is that the dogs go in on their Wednesday walks.

Dembe had a wonderful time playing with the Tuesday doggies that were out.

Dembe and his daddy were knackered by the time they got back to the car as they had been out for around an hour having met up with Beth and the dogs. Dembe was really happy and shattered. He went straight to sleep in the back of the car.

Dembe slept much of the rest of the day!

Wednesday 18th August

Today Dembe will be back with the Creature Kind crew for the first time in 3 weeks due to Jay’s holiday and then Dembe needing to rest with his poorly leg. Jay is on two late’s one after the other so it is going to be odd for Dembe and me.

Dembe had an absolute ball. Apparently Polo and him were running down the path mouthing each other, to make up for lost time in not seeing each other. They really do adore each other! When Dembe jumped in the van the first thing he did was put his head right up to the bars on Polo’s crate to say hello. He is such a sociable pup he makes friends everywhere but Polo is his best doggy friend.

He was absolutely shattered when he got home and slept for a good 40 minutes to an hour before he started demanding his dinner. When I say he starts demanding his dinner he either sits in from of the fridge and cries or he follows you around crying. I say to him, do you want your dinner and he bolts into the kitchen.

He really wasn't happy with the size of his dinner and wanted more the cheeky monkey. Look at that face!

Thursday 19th August

So today is the second of Jay’s late shifts which is odd as normally we get a normal shift between late nights. As Jay has to sort out the car getting a new tyre and being retested for its annual MOT, we decided to book Dembe in with Happy Dogs today a we have no guarantee that Jay will have enough time to take Dembe out for a proper walk plus the car will be at the garage for a bit.

Martin and Luke from Happy Dogs picked Dembe up at around 9.50am. Dembe decided to give Luke some more cuddles today before getting into the van !

For only the second time since we have had Dembe, Jay got to experience the house without him. He absolutely hated it. Even though Dembe sleeps a lot of the time it was too quiet and the lack of his physical presence could really be felt. Jay went to work before Dembe arrived home at around 12.30pm. Good news that he still has no limp present and that he was a really good boy.

We had a lovely cuddly afternoon together Dembe and I. Jay popped back at 5pm and took him out for a walk.

We went to bed really early and Dembe was fast asleep by 8pm snoring his head off.

Friday 20th August

Dembe’s daddy is on a 9-6 shift today, I have stopped booking Dembe in for walks on a 9-6 shift as he usually is taken out twice before Jay leaves for work and then again at lunchtime. Usually a 9-6 follows a Wednesday late so he is happy to sleep a lot of the day after being run ragged by the Creature Kind crew.

This afternoon he decided to be a bit of a Labratwat and kept climbing up on my lap and grinding his bony elbow into my thighs. I ended up giving him a deer leg to keep him occupied and to give my lap a bit of break!

Hopefully from next week I will no longer have the white background behind posts as I will be writing them directly into blogger rather than using the Dembe Diaries over on Wordpress. Thanks for sticking with us. I can't believe we have used up all the storage!

W/C 5th July 2021

W/C 5th July 2021

Dembe had been doing really well over the weekend and he had stopped limping, so on Sunday I contacted Happy Dogs to let them know he would be ok to be walked. Sadly though when Martin brought him back he was limping again. Martin said he was limping from the minute he jumped out of the van. It isn’t as pronounced as it was but still not good. I decided to cancel his walk on Wednesday with Sophie at Creature Kind and give him a week of proper rest. He only had those two walks booked this week anyway so he isn’t missing much.

We have been continuing with his supplements and he likes them, so that’s good. We crush them up in a pestle and mortar and then sprinkle the powder over his meals. They seem to be doing the trick and he is definitely not limping around the house. The issue is more noticeable when he gets up after being asleep as he is stiff. So we shall keep an eye on him this week. If he isn’t right by next Monday we shall take him to the vet. He has only been limping since last Thursday so it is 4 days that is not enough for a sprain or strain to heal.

I am a bit worried with how he will cope with not going out with a dog walker this week as some weeks he is out 4 times. I had reduced it back this month as a bit of an experiment to see if he needed it. He will be 3 years old in November and although he still has his mental activity periods he is more than happy to lie around and sleep. This is the week I shall find out if I can keep him calm and less mobile. Wish me luck.

Thankfully his extra treats arrived this week, as long as he has something to chew on he is a happy boy.

Tuesday 6th July

Dembe didn’t start fussing for his breakfast until 8.30am but first we piled into daddy’s room. It is our morning routine when Jay is on a late or day off that Dembe and I go in and wake him him. We all lie on the bed and chat, Dembe always brings us his blue dinosaur. He has this weird thing where he will have a cuddle with us for ages and then all of a sudden he will jump up and run down to the end of the bed. Jay then has to take the duvet of his feet, Dembe then gives Jays foot a sniff and sometimes a lick. Then he comes back up to the top of the bed again. It makes us laugh every time he does it. We have no clue why he has to check Jays feet!

I was busy chatting away to them both when I suddenly heard them both snoring!

Dembe has had his usual lead walks during the day, Jay has just made them shorter rather than doing a walk around the block to ensure he keeps his leg rested as much as possible.

Again he has spent a lot of the day sleeping and hasn’t seemed that fussed about not having long walks. If we could have got away with it we wouldn’t have taken him out at all but he point blank refuses to use the garden to go to the toilet.

Wednesday 7th July

Jay is on a 10.30-7.30 shift due to the football, normally he would have been late night. Dembe is certainly spending a lot of the afternoon looking for Sophie. I feel sorry for him but he really must rest, there will be other walks.

He got a bit barky around 6pm but it was ok he still settled down.

He is not showing any signs of a limp now and is just a bit tentative when getting up. I had a look at my phone to discover when he last had a limp. It was back at the end of April. I am wondering if we didn’t let him rest it enough and that is why it has flared up again. Having checked his legs numerous times there is no swelling, no heat and he isn’t taking his leg away from you when you examine it. It is his left leg.

Thursday 8th July

We came downstairs to this today

Dembe didn’t notice Cleo on the sofa until we came back in with his breakfast. He went mental it was the first time I have ever heard him growl. He was barking and growling and all his hair was standing on end.

To ensure Dembe hasn’t been a pain the bum for our neighbours I have spent as much time as I can in the lounge with him so he doesn’t stand at the front window barking at every noise from outside. He has spent a lot of the week curled up on my lap ( as much as a full grown Labrador can be on its owners lap ). By staying with him he has been much more settled .

Dembe now lets us know when he wants to go out for a walk, he stands by the front door. If his blue lead is hanging up he will nudge that with his nose. He doesn’t bark or whine he will just stand facing the door. He usually starts to do this just before Jay is coming home.

Friday 9th July

Oh my goodness Dembe didn’t wake up until 6am for his morning walk and then didn’t wake up until 10am for breakfast. He only woke up because I was stirring otherwise he would have continued to sleep. It was really nice to have a proper lie on.

Despite sleeping on until 10am Dembe was still more than happy to spend the majority of the day dosing. Jay was on a late night so that suited me fine, he popped back at 5pm to give Dembe a walk around the block.

Due to having his breakfast really late Demeb wasn’t hungry for his dinner until gone 6pm. Normally he starts begging by sitting in front of the fridge any time from 3.15pm onwards.

He likes eating his dinner in the lounge! Spoilt pup. He polished off the lot.

I managed to capture him licking his lips after he had finished his dinner. Every day we are seeing an improvement in Dembe. He has started running again on walks now.

Saturday 10th July

Today I saw Dembe running and he has no signs of a limp at all. I also saw him walking up hill on the lead after his walk again no limp. This is fantastic news. So hopefully he will be able to resume walks with his dog walkers this week.

Sunday 11th July

We are having a lazy Sunday before the England match this evening.

Have a good week.

Week Commencing 25th October 2021

As we suffered a bereavement this week there won't be much of a Dembe's Diary this week. I will after this post be having a break ...
